I was in the middle of a successful basketball season, coaching at a division 1 university in New York with aspirations to become a head coach in the not too distant future when I heard Holy Spirit say as clear as day, “We are going in a different direction. I’m breaking basketball off of you.”
After the season ended, I packed up and headed back to my home state of Virginia and tried to apply to new jobs. But every time I tried to apply I would hear Holy Spirit say, “Chill.” “Relax.” “Wait.” I began to realize that the Lord was redeeming time and renewing energy that an 8 year college coaching career had inevitably depleted. I was able to participate in birthdays, weddings, holidays, and travel leisurely – things I had not easily had the ability to do as a college coach. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to REST in God’s Presence as I was waiting for Him to tell me what was next.
Qavah is the Hebrew word for wait, meaning to bind together, to expect, eagerly waiting. As I waited, let me tell you that I became bound to Holy Spirit like never before – being intertwined with Him in EVERY part of my life. I learned to trust Him like never before. Without a home or income He never failed to provide a place for me to stay or finances. In fact, on occasion I would wake up to a text saying, “God told me to send you money. Check your CashApp.”
After a year of waiting, God told me to return to The River to be the youth and young adult minister with a renewed strength. Now we wait, eagerly expecting His promises of salvations, miracles, signs and wonders to build His Kingdom.
Are we in a place of submission, to wait, to intertwine our lives with our Heavenly Father?
If so, we will KNOW Him like never before and it will cause us to eagerly expect Him to move in mighty ways.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
